SYA Japan Opens Fall 2010
A celebratory welcoming reception held in late September capped months of effort to incorporate and develop supportive contacts for SYA’s newest school, set to open in Ichinomiya, Japan, in September 2010.
SYA Japan is currently accepting applications from students with or without Japanese language experience who would like to master Japanese and spend a year living in a welcoming and relaxed modern city of about 300,000 people, located just 15 minutes by commuter train from downtown Nagoya, a major port and transportation hub with a population of 2.2 million.
By joining forces with nearby towns to take advantage of the assets of the entire region, Ichinomiya has emerged in recent years as a destination spot, known for its balance of natural beauty with industry and modern infrastructure. An efficient public transportation system will give students the opportunity to explore their home city, well-known cultural sites such as Kyoto, and many equally interesting destinations less well known to tourists.
The SYA Japan curriculum will mirror the one that has been successfully offered for so many years in China. Students will receive full credit for coursework in English, math, Japanese history, and Japanese Society and Culture, along with a double credit in intensive Japanese language.
A year in Japan will empower students to understand some of the most pressing issues of our day—economic, technological and environmental—learning from a nation that has taken a lead in innovation. SYA Japan will share the central elements of SYA schools around the world: a nine-month homestay; extracurricular activities with local organizations; distinctive educational travel; and an intellectually stimulating, full-credit academic program.
